At first, the answer seemed simple. She was Hollywood's first Chinese American movie star. A pioneering actress. A fashion icon. A woman who crossed oceans, languages, and industries. But the more I learned about her, the more I realized I was asking a second question at the same time:

I first discovered Anna May Wong as a teenager while researching Chinese American history. I was drawn to her immediately, though I didn't yet understand why. Like Anna May, I am Chinese American. Like her, I was born and raised in California. Like her family, mine traces its roots to Toisan in southern China. Yet growing up, I often felt caught between identities. Too Chinese in some spaces. Not Chinese enough in others. American, but frequently asked where I was "really" from. Looking back, I can see that I was searching for a way to reconcile these different parts of myself. Anna May Wong helped me do that. She showed me that my identities were not contradictions. They could coexist. They always had.

What began as curiosity gradually grew into a lifelong passion. Over the years, I collected photographs, playbills, magazine articles, film stills, stamps, records, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia from around the world. I spent countless hours searching archives, libraries, auction sites, and forgotten corners of the internet. I created online communities dedicated to preserving Anna May Wong's legacy. I connected with fellow researchers, historians, collectors, and fans across continents. Together, we pieced together fragments of a life that was often overlooked, misunderstood, or reduced to a handful of familiar stories.
 

Again and again, I encountered remarkable details that never seemed to fit neatly into a traditional biography. There was Anna May Wong the actress. Anna May Wong the traveler. The fashion trendsetter. The radio performer. The television pioneer. The stage actress. The activist. The collector. The daughter. The friend. The global celebrity. The woman whose image appeared on everything from tobacco cards in Chile to commemorative stamps in Grenada. Each discovery felt like another piece of an enormous mosaic.

Eventually, I realized that what I wanted to create was not another biography. I wanted to build a reference work—a place where readers could explore the full scope of Anna May Wong's life and legacy. A place where the famous stories could stand alongside the obscure ones. A place where researchers, students, film fans, and the simply curious could discover something new.

That vision became The Anna May Wong Compendium: From May to Zahrat.

Like the archives that inspired it, this book is a collection of connections. It is an invitation to wander through Anna May Wong's world one entry at a time, discovering not only the woman herself but also the people, places, films, events, and cultural moments that shaped her extraordinary life.

In many ways, this project is also a story about belonging. Anna May Wong spent her life navigating multiple worlds and identities. More than a century later, her story continues to resonate with people who are doing the same. Through her films, photographs, and surviving records, she reminds us that identity is not a choice between one thing or another. It is often both.

This book is my contribution to preserving that legacy and sharing it with future generations.
